Competency 11: Student Personnel

Create and Analyze Student Management Graphics

Student Management and Discipline

Student management traditionally is handled by the assistant principals at most schools.  At the International Academy of Flint this function is performed by Student Management Coordinators (SMC’s). There is one SMC and assistant for every school (lower school, middle school, and upper school).  In total there are six SMC’s for about 1,200 students. Kendra Giles is the Student Management Administrator and in charge of the staff of SMC’s and the severe problems that arise with student discipline.

Procedures and Reporting

Staff at IAF carries a PDA, handheld reporting computers that syncs wirelessly with the Student Management System (SMS).  A teacher may log an infraction into any P.D.A. at anytime by logging in under their user identification with a password and reporting the infraction with a check under a list of possible infractions, followed by a brief description in the comments section of the reporting form.  This information is transferred to SMS where it alerts an SMC, and it allows that SMC to decide when and how this issue needs to be addressed.  Additionally, the system keeps track of date, time, infraction type, infraction issuer, and all comments for each individual student, so as to create a database of students and their infractions.

Reflections

As I compile data, I thought about the reasons why some effective teachers have very few infracts, whereas other effective teachers had the most infractions.  Data was also compromised from teachers on maternity leave.  Overall, this investigation led to more questions and confirmed thoughts I have about student behaviors with regards to “growing up”.
