A mini lesson will be done on search engines (explain how they work and give examples), using the library search (by author, text, and subject, then how to find the call number in the library), and validity (use http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.html) and citing sources using MLA format.
Pull up this website http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/print/research/r_mla.html go over citing a book, internet, and others
Student groups will break into two subgroups that will use different search engines to look for information. Also, one person from each group will be randomly chosen to find books about the author and/or African-American culture, language arts, and history.  I will show examples of research I have done on these authors, strategies for comprehension, and how to document that research properly.  I will help student groups navigate and search the Internet as I monitor their progress. Twenty minutes before the end of the hour we will get off the computers to get back together into groups to share and highlight what  each member of the group will have to do for homework and write that in their journals. For Homework, you will begin writing a short Biography on your author a couple paragraphs and analyze the poem you were given in your journals. I will be reading these tomarrow.
