Clinical Practice Plan

 

     The following are the planned clinical practice activities to be undertaken by Todd Beard during the Winter Term 2010 at the University of Michigan - Flint. Satisfactory completion of these clinical activities is a requirement for completion of the Masters in Public Administration Program. This clinical experience will be completed at the International Academy of Flint under the direction of Ms. Traci Cormier, Director, who will serve as the cooperating administrator and provide on-site supervision of the experience.

 

COMPETENCY 1: ACCOUNTABILITY (Teaching and Learning)

Related Task 1.1

Ability to interpret meaning of various standardized tests to boards, teachers and lay citizens.

Specific Task 1.1.3

Ability to use assessment data to identify weaknesses and recommend strategies for improving student performance.

Narrative description of specific task:

I will serve on a subcommittee which is preparing for review of the "Michigan Educational Assessment Program" results. This is a standardized test put forth by the State of Michigan in compliance with No Child Left Behind in order to hold public schools more accountable for their educational practices.  The majority of this data is on 3rd -11th grades test score for Math, Social Studies, Language Arts and Science.

Also, I will assist in the formulation of the report which will be submitted to the School Improvement Committee, Director and School Board for initial review. I will assist in compiling the data, finalizing the wording to be used, and producing the final report which will be sent to the Sabis Educational Management company.

 

 

COMPETENCY 3: COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Specific Task 3.8.3

Conduct a staff meeting.

Narrative description of specific task:

I will assemble a handout with items of interest for staff in a given month. Follow the procedures for a normal staff meeting, and attend an administration meeting

 

 

COMPETENCY 4: CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION, AND SUPERVISION

Related Task 4.3

Knowledge of a variety of instructional methods and skills.

Specific Task 4.3.7

Conduct a clinical evaluation cycle including observation in a typical classroom.

Narrative description of specific task:

Carry out a classroom observation and post-observation conference with a consenting colleague, Tammy Crowl 5th grade teacher, using the district's evaluation instrument and procedures.  I will prepare a written evaluation based on the classroom observation using the districts reporting format.  Interview the staff member after the formal conclusion of the post conference concerning her perceptions about administrative practices and behaviors that facilitate meaningful evaluations and promote growth by staff members.  Reflect on the process and what represents good administrative practice.

 

 

COMPETENCY 7: OUT OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Related Task 7.1

Ability to plan, implement, supervise, and evaluate a program of activities for during and after school

Specific Task 7.1.2

Take responsibility for planning, coordinating, and supervising an activity. Provide written detail of the activity including costs, time involved, and recommendations for similar events.

Narrative description of specific task:

Create a Video Journalism After-school program.  I will create a plan with measurable objectives and goals.  I will investigate material costs and search for the best materials at the best price. Complete Purchase request forms. Maintain equipment and develop a strategy to measure progress and identify strengths and weaknesses of the program implementation.

 

 

COMPETENCY 11: STUDENT PERSONNEL

Related Task 11.2

Knowledge of principles of discipline, student control, etc.

Specific Task 11.2.8

Survey or interview staff members regarding their perceptions of problems that arise during implementation of the school discipline policy and what they recommend to overcome the problems .

 

Narrative description of specific task:

I will conduct a survey combined with interviews of staff members regarding school discipline policies after a professional development with Mark McLeod.  I will organize the information into graphics to help understand and disseminate the data. 

 

 

COMPETENCY X: JOB SHADOWING

Narrative description of specific task:

I will spend one day shadowing my cooperating administrator, Traci Cormier. Assist administrator when appropriate. Write a reflective summary of the day citing all activities and providing a thoughtful analysis of the number, nature and focus of the activities and with who the administrator interacted. Describe and assess the decision making processes and styles used by the administrator in responding to various categories of demands or problems. Identify several crucial lessons the day taught about school leadership and administrative practices.

In addition, spend one day with the assistant administrator in charge of discipline. Assess the strategies used by the administrator in dealing with the various types of disciplinary actions. Observe and assess the other responsibilities of the assistant administrator and identify the crucial lessons the day taught about school leadership and administrative practices.

Attend administrative meetings whenever time permits and report on the extent, time commitment, and paperwork these meetings entail.

It is understood that this proposal, once approved by the Cooperating Administrator and University Faculty, represents the agreed plan of work for this field experience. Upon the satisfactory completion of this plan of work a grade will be given and credit for the course granted.
