All Spirals have a distinct "pinwheel" (or "whirlpool", or "vortex") shape to them. Their spiral shape is composed of varying numbers of spiral arms, which additionally vary in strength from very strong to hardly noticeable.

Note: you can still see some of the gas and dust clouds in the spiral arms of these galaxies

This next spiral has a large number of non-distinct arms...

The next pictures are of Barred Spirals - the centers of all spiral galaxies are not necessarily round, in some cases they can have an elongated "bar-like" structure to them (such as this galaxy - in fact our own Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy and probably looks quite similar to the galaxy in the following picture).

the cosmos, however, when we look out into the universe, spiral
