Resources for Finding Neat Stuff at Night
Earth, Moon, and Planets
These pages are primarily geared to the beginning astronomer, and/or give
particularly interesting information. For a few of these pages, it may be
necessary to enter the Latitude/Longitude of your observing site, and/or the
Universal Time (also called Greenwich Mean Time or UT) you are planning to
observe. (This page is always under construction)
- Apparent
Disk of Solar System Objects - find out what a number of solar
system objects (including the moon, Jupiter, and Mars) will look like
through a telescope on a given date and time
- Can
we see Apollo hardware on the Moon? - good site about imaging Apollo
landing sites on the Moon
- Current
Solar Images - images of the sun taken in different wavelengths
of light
- Doomsday
Asteroid - JAVA model of the Solar System (the sun, the nine planets,
and an asteroid); you can change options describing the asteroid's orbit,
and which planets are shown (editing the asteroid's options to 3, 0, 15, -5
gives it a nice elliptical orbit)
- Earth and Moon
Viewer (also at
another
site) - view simulated pictures of the Earth and Moon showing interesting
phenomena related to them
- Earth Impact
Effects Program - a program that will estimate the seismic, blast
wave, and thermal effects of an impact as well as the size of the
crater produced by the impact on the earth
- Earth Observatory -
images of the Earth and events on the Earth from space
- Eclipse
Home Page - everything you would ever want to know about eclipses, out
of NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
- Heavens Above Satellite
Predictions - find predictions of what/when satellites are visible
from ANY location on the Earth, including timings for the passing of
the new International Space Station (ISS), and the spectacularly bright
"flares" that are regularly produced by the Iridium series
of communications satellites
- The
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Moon - lots of technical info about the
moon
- Lunar and
Planetary Observations and CCD Imaging - an amazing site full of time-lapse
animation of celestial phenomena from eclipses, to the rotation of planets,
to the motions of Jupiter's moons
- Lunar Photo of the Day -
photo with description of the moon, changes daily
- Moon Phases Calendar -
calanders showing what the moon will look like each night (they even have
printable versions!), also available from StarDate Online
- Moon
Phases JAVA - JAVA program illustrating the phases of the moon, as
viewed from Earth, from space, or from both; works either as an animation, or
hand enter a particular phase
- Night Sky Info - weekly
information about the night sky, astronomy articles, and observations
- The Nine Planets -
a multimedia tour of the Solar System
- Phases of the Moon -
a page that I made with diagrams to show the phases of the Moon from both
space and Earth
- Phases
of the Moon - a much more "flashy" page describing the phase
of the moon and what causes them (its a lot better than the page I made)
- Phases of the
Moon Tables - tables giving the date/time of New Moon, First Quarter, Full,
and Last Quarter phases of the moon for many years
- Que Tal? in the Current Sky -
an Earth in Space Monthly Newsletter
- Solar System Live - find
out where the planets are in their orbits and in the sky right now
- Space Weather -- news and
information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and
near-Earth asteroids
- Sun and Moon
Data for One Day - tables that give sun rise/set, moon rise/set, and
start/end of twilight for any day and from any place
- Touring
the Moon with Binoculars
- Moon Map -
large image of the moon with interesting features labeled
- Views of the Solar
System (English
Version) - solar system learning guide for people of all ages
- What's
a Blue Moon? - article about what a `blue moon' really is
- Where
is Hubble Now? - shows current location of the Hubble Space
Telescope over the Earth
- World
Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness - satellite monitoring
of the artificial night sky brightness and stellar visibility
- Weather
Links - find out what the weather will be like from your favorite
observing site
- Bad Astronomy - have you seen
"Deep Impact" or "Armageddon" and wondered if that could
really happen? how about some of those sci-fi shows on TV? have you wondered
why the sky is blue? and what causes the seasons? - for the answer to these
and many more questions, AND to find out all about "bad" astronomy
spread by the media you have to check out this site!
- Information
about star naming and "buying" a star
