Stay Wise in this hour of difficulty, posted on Wednesday, April 04, 2007 at 02:40:49 PM

Text of post:

As the trial begins to come to a close, I simply wish to tell all jurors to stay wise in their decision making. Remember, that we cannot make decisions unless we know what is happening. As I have written before, the extent of our rationality expands no further than "the materials afforded us by the senses and experience." And also, "Ideas may be compar'd to the extension and solidity of matter, and impressions, especially reflective ones, to colours, tastes, smells and other sensible qualities. Ideas never admit of a total union, but are endow'd with a kind of impenetrability, by which they exclude each other, and are capable of forming a compound by their conjunction, not by their mixture. On the other hand, impressions and passions are susceptible of an entire union; and like colours, may be blended so perfectly together, that each of them may lose itself, and contribute only to vary that uniform impression, which arises from the whole. Some of the most curious phaenomena of the human mind are deriv'd from this property of the passions" So I beg that each justice will stay ever vigilant through the proceedings and continue to research this grave case. Do not let anyone misguide you with rumors as to make your ideas "blend" together. Stay true to your position and keep it.
