Today I discovered TiddlyWiki. I was looking for something else, but this will do.
What do you want to know? The usual, I suppose.

I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  It was a rich city then. GM employed a couple of hundred thousand people in the county. Now it's down to about six thousand employees -- and dropping fast. Not my fault.

My father was a foreman at the Buick. Plant 10.  He's gone, and so is the Buick. Not any of our faults.  My mom is still very much with us. She likes hockey, and we go to Flint Generals games in the winter.

I graduated from Flint Southwestern when it was still a regular high school. Eventually I attended the University of Michigan at Flint (as it was called then) and still much later I earned a degree in English there. Then I went to Indiana University for a while, earning an MA in English Language and completing all the course work and exams for the ~PhD in rhetoric and composition.  Somehow I forgot to write my dissertation. (I have it here somewhere . . .) Returning to Flint, I worked for my dad for a few months (he had retired and gone into business with some friends) as a combination janitor and computer programmer/ consultant. Then a job opened up for teaching writing at UM-Flint and I got it.

By this time I was married to a beautiful woman from Lapeer. I still am, and she still is -- beautiful and from Lapeer.  We have two children, one in college and the other about to be. 

My interests include computers (programming, web site construction, blogging), writing, reading history and mystery novels (noir stuff, mostly -- hard-boiled detectives and the tough women who love them), and arguing.  I take walks to think as much as to exercise.  I should take more of them because I am over-weight, and I think that pretty much is my fault.

The year I turned 50 I helped to organize and lead a labor union, the Lecturers' Employee Organization, which represents the lecturers on all three campuses of the University of Michigan.  I am the webmaster for the union's web site at http://www.leounion.org.

I like teaching because it allows me to be creative, to communicate ideas, to help others and to make the world a better place. The world needs people trying to make it better.  Because the way things are, that is our fault.
All of my courses, including those that meet on campus, make use of the online course service, Blackboard. 

I make copies of important course documents (such as the syllabus and major assignments) available on the Blackboard site, and use "My Grades" as the official course grade book. Students are able to double-check their course grades at any time.  Final drafts of major papers are turned in via Blackboard. After I have read and insert comments in the digital papers, I return them to students via Blackboard so that there is a complete record of everyone's work on the site.

"College Rhetoric" is the first semester of freshman composition at UM-Flint, and the prerequisite for [[English 112]]. The prerequisite for English 111 itself is placement by test score.  I frequently teach English 111 online as well as on campus. Students plan, write and revise a series of original essays (usually four), with the goal of improving their written expression. They also read, analyze, and discuss professional essays, and critique the drafts of classmates. Formal research is a small part of the course. Students draw on their own experience and observations for material, as well as on the assigned textbook readings and class discussions. There are also a few shorter writing assignments. 

The primary goals of English 111 are to help students develop writing fluency, confidence in their ability to write, and increased competence in producing interesting, readable prose in a variety of modes, styles, and organizational patterns. When a student successfully completes English 111, she or he should better understand and be able to do the following:

Choose and narrow a paper topic, generate material, plan and write a rough draft, and revise, polish, proofread. 

Write with fluency in a variety of modes and styles. 

Critique your own writing and that of others. 

Organize a piece of writing based on the purpose of the piece and its intended audience. 

Use evidence to support your main points and back up your opinions.

Write an essay based on readings, drawing on those readings to support your ideas.

English 112, "Critical Writing and Reading," is required for graduation from the university. The course focuses on academic writing, which typically means “writing from sources.”  The prerequisite is successful completion of [[English 111]].

Academic writing often begins with the careful, critical reading of one or more texts.  Academic writing also often takes the form of an argument, in which the writer makes and defends a thoughtful claim through logic and evidence. The main objective of this course is to strengthen a student's academic/ critical reading and writing skills. Early assignments involve summarizing, analyzing and evaluating other writers’ arguments; later assignments explore how to develop original arguments from source material in a researched argument.  Typically, there are four major writing assignments, a few shorter assignments, and reading quizzes.

A major theme in my English 112 course is that, as a writer, you should defend your //best// position on an issue, arrived at through honest inquiry, not your first position.  This requires a willingness to change your mind if the evidence demands it. Surprisingly few people are so willing.

English 338, "Communications in Business," is cross-listed as Communications 338.   The prerequisites are completion of ENG 112 and at least junior standing.

COM/ ENG 338 focuses on the theory and practice of business communications.  The main course objective is to enhance students’ ability to communicate in business and organizational settings. Students learn about and employ strategies for analyzing the context, audience and purpose of a message, and for creating and delivering clear, complete, correct messages that meet the needs of both the sender and the audience. The course covers written, oral and visual communications. Students work both individually and in teams to complete the required projects.  Typically, there are four major individual writing assignments, two individual presentations, and three team presentations.  There are numerous short, in-class assignments and quizzes.

The Marian Wright Computer Writing Classroom is a facility in 557 French Hall that I manage on behalf of the Department of English and the Writing Program.  The room was founded in 1996, and owes its name and its existence to the generosity of Marian E. Wright. When the room originally opened, it held 36 ~MacIntosh computers, two printers, and its own server.  Today, the MWCWC is equipped with 25 late model Dell computers, a high-speed printer, and a large piece of audio-visual equipment known as a ~SmartCart. Typically, 8-10 writing classes meet in the MWCWC during the fall and winter semesters. My classes often meet there, especially [[English 112]].

This web site was created with ~TiddlyWiki, a special sort of web page that allows you to do more than just open it and read it.  You can also edit the page and add to it, from //within the page itself//.  By doing so, you create an interactive, non-linear, digital document. It's an amazingly easy way to create a web site or a personal hyper-text notebook.  All this, and it's free!
