Part 1 – Getting Started – Learning about AT
To begin your research, visit this site to learn about the IDEA definition of Assistive Technology devices and services.
Gain an understanding of the full spectrum of available AT devices – from No/Low to High Tech. Here is another great resource describing the continuum.
Watch this video about an individual with learning disabilities to get a feel for what a difference Assistive Technology can make!
Read about the advantages of using calculators with students with learning disabilities. Reflect on your attitude toward using such tools in your classroom.
Part 2 – Determine your student’s needs
Determine what Robby’s needs are based on his disability. Visit LD Online to get a sense of what kinds of difficulties students with learning disabilities face. Then create (make it up) an overview of what Robby’s strengths and weaknesses are. This step will be vital to being able to clarify your rationale for choosing different tools for your final presentation.
Use Joy Zabala’s SETT Framework as a template for developing your full description of Robby.
Use this SETT form for recording your ideas.
Part 3 – Research
Now that you have determined Robby’s strengths and weaknesses, visit some of the following sites to locate AT devices that will help Robby access the general education curriculum, particularly in the areas in which he struggles: reading, mathematics, and organization (remember: these are the specific areas in which the IEP team determined tools would be beneficial).
Abledata
Closing the Gap – Product Database
Don Johnston Incorporated – Access to Learning
Onion Mountain Technology
Assistive Technology Tools for Math
Parents, Let’s Unite for Kids: A Family Guide to Assistive Technology
Inspiration Software
These are just a few websites with ideas and tools for students with a variety of disabilities. Some of the sites you have visited in the previous steps may also contain valuable links and information for your research. Don’t forget to use internet search engines to seek some others!
Part 4 – Put it all together
Now is a good time to review the evaluation section of this WebQuest so that you know how your work will be assessed.
You have gathered the information needed to determine the tools you are recommending and to create your presentation. Don’t forget, you need to consider a range of tools, from no/low to high tech options, and present at least three tools for each area identified by the IEP team. Be sure that your final presentation includes the information from the SETT Form you completed in part 2 (above).
Make sure your presentation contains proper (APA) citations for all tools and websites used.
